The 1975’s Matt Healy Slams Paid Meet & Greets

The 1975 frontman Matt Healy has always been outspoken about what he believes in, and now he is letting his thoughts known about the concept of paid meet and greets – fans paying extra money to meet artists at concerts.

Taking to Twitter, he slammed the idea, telling artists to meet their fans for free or not at all.

“Who came up with payed (sic) meet and greets?” he wrote.

“Did they think “Surely there must be something else we can monetise……..OH! Human connection!! They’ll eat that up!”

“MEET YOUR FANS OR DON’T,” he continued.

When a Twitter user said that paid M&G’s are a good idea for up-and-coming artists who don’t earn as much, Healy shot down that idea as well.

“You can’t be big enough for people to want to pay to meet you whilst not being big enough to pay for touring,” he said.

“It’s a paradoxical excuse for making MUSIC EXCLUSIVE.”

“Rich kids, you line up on the left. Poor kids, just fuck off.”

He then went on to say the entire concept wouldn’t exist if major labels hadn’t normalised it.

“I think the problem is that a lot of artists don’t understand how brutal it is, because MAJOR LABELS have normalised it,” he said.

“So MAJOR LABELS should change it. They should make all fans pay in cash – directly to the artist. They should literally hand over the $200. Would soon stop.”

It’s safe to say, then, that the 1975 will not be doing paid meet and greets on their tour of Australia this September. In happier news, we should be able to expect their new album, Notes On A Conditional Form, some time this May.
