Triple J news presenter and brekky host Brooke Boney has been tapped to replace old mate Richard Wilkins on The Today Show, which is undergoing a major revamp following the sensational dumping of Karl Stefanovic.

Boney will take the reigns as the brekky TV show’s new entertainment correspondent, which will see her become one of the most prominent Indigenous personalities on Australian commercial telly.

Wilkins isn’t going anywhere though. His role is just pivoting to entertainment editor.

“I’m really thrilled to be joining the team and so excited to be working alongside Richard Wilkins,” Boney said in a statement (via The Guardian). “He’s such a legend in the business.”

“As a young girl growing up in the country I watched Today, so it’s really awesome to know it’ll be my new home.”

Brooke is a Gamilaroi woman who grew up in the NSW Hunter Valley, and the 31-year-old says she’s privileged to be a role model for indigenous youth.

“If young Aboriginal people can see other blackfellas kicking goals, they can imagine themselves doing it too,” she said earlier this year.

Tweeting a story about Brooke’s recruitment, the Herald Sun wrote: “Today’s Richard Wilkins replaced by unknown radio presenter”, which has led to the paper copping a serving from Boney’s fellow triple J presenter, Bridget Hustwaite.

Taking to Twitter, Hustwaite clapped back: “’Unknown radio presenter’ from the the highly coveted breakfast slot of the national youth broadcaster with over 55k followers on Instagram yeah seems pretty unknown doesn’t she HS”

What she said. Huge congrats, Brooke!!
