Love Letter To A Record: Mansionair On Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Mansionair – Daft Punk’s Discovery

Dear Discovery,

It’s been a few years from when we first met but I still constantly think about you, do you still think about me?

When my friend first introduced us I have to say I was skeptical, you weren’t really “my type”. I had only really listened to rock albums and my first reaction to so called “dance music” was one of caution. What a fool I once was. But as I delved deeper into you I realised the complexity in your production and the mind-blowing catchiness of every song.

Of course I had heard about you around, I mean ‘One More Time’ was played on every video show I could think of but it wasn’t until I heard songs like ‘Something About Us’, ‘Aerodynamic’ and ‘Superheroes’ that I truely fell in love. I hadn’t really heard production like this before, subtle yet punchy, and and it really opened up my interest in electronic music. Every song has a quirkiness to it but still makes me want to dance, which as you know is very out of character for me.

If the 14 tracks weren’t enough of a gift then the live album Alive 2007 was the icing on the cake. The blending and reworking of all my favourite songs again was another world I didn’t know existed.

My long standing favourite on the album is ‘Voyager’, which has one of the best bass lines I’ve ever laid my ears on. It still makes a regular appearance in my DJ sets. From year 12 high school student to now being in an electronic band Discovery really was a huge turning point in my musical taste and really sets the bench mark for what makes a complete album. It really is a timeless album and even though you have moved on to bigger things I certainly haven’t. <3
